Privacy policy

Your privacy and the integrity of the information you provide this site (your email address) are the primary reasons this site exists. This is a non-commercial service -- no value is placed on your information, and no gain will be derived from the possession of it.

The computers providing our service are located in California, USA, and administered primarily from Texas, USA. We lease computer(s) from CARI.net in San Diego, California, to host the service and data. We retain administrative control of the computer(s), and CARI.net personnel normally do not have access to the data. They do have physical access to the computer(s), and we rely on them to properly dispose of failing hard drives (which have data on them) and things like that. We have on a few occasions granted them administrative access to the computer(s) to help resolve availability issues, but we revoke it when the issues are resolved.

Our service will send a confirmation message when you sign up or change your protected address, and will send a password reset message if you request it. Other than that, we will only send you email by replying to you if you contact us. (Note that this is an email forwarding service - you will likely receive a lot of messages that come by way of our service, but didn't originate with us.)

We have never sent a broadcast message to our users via their protected addresses and probably never will -- instead we post notices on the BBS and via twitter sometimes. This means that if you care to keep up with news about the service, you will need to check the website or bbs (or twitter) every once in a while.

Information collected by this site

In order for the service to function, you must provide an email address at which you can receive email (the protected address). You provide this information at registration and when you wish to change your protected address. The website allows you to put arbitrary notes on each spamgourmet address. Other than that, except for the standard web and mail logging described below, no personal information is collected about you. Our code does not store email in any way. It is either immediately forwarded to your email address or erased in volatile memory.

We use standard web server and mail server software (Apache 2 and Exim 4) to help provide the service, and these servers use default log settings, including recording IP addresses. The logs are retained using standard settings of Debian Linux, which periodically rotates the log files, deleting old ones. Our code may log information about events that appear to indicate use of our service in violation of our terms of use. We sometimes view these log files to assist with support requests and fraud investigations.

Information collected by our service is and will be used for no purpose other than to provide and improve the service and to identify and prevent prohibited use of the service. We will not provide this information under any circumstances to any party other than duly authorized law enforcment officials, or a court of competent jurisdiction and only in connection with a legitimate investigation.

Cookies

For authenticated sessions, our website uses session cookies which remain in your computer's memory until you log out or close your browser. Our website does not use persistent cookies by default and stores no information on your computer between sessions, unless you request such cookies by clicking the appropriate option ("remember me"). The website does not provide any third party cookies (or other content) and makes no effort to track you, unless you count the logging described above.

Deletion/Retrieval of Data

You can delete your protected address at any time by setting it to be blank and saving. Note that all incoming mail for your account is destroyed during any time that your account does not have a protected address to foward it to.

You can delete each spamgourmet address associated with your account, including the data stored with it, in advanded mode. Note that if someone else has your deleted spamgourmet address and uses it to send you a message, the address will be re-created in our system (but not any previously associated data, such as notes, counts, etc.).

You can retrieve your data at any time in XML format by clicking on the XML link in advanced mode.
